Brook Ellen Schoenwald

Principal

Newly appointed principal flute of the Colorado Symphony, Schoenwald completed a three year fellowship with the New World Symphony in May of 2010 and has previously served as principal flutist of the Delaware Symphony Orchestra and acting principal flutist of the Knoxville Symphony. She has appeared as guest principal flutist with the Pittsburgh Symphony and as guest associate principal flutist with the Baltimore Symphony. Schoenwald maintains an active commitment to solo playing with recent and upcoming recital performances at the Peabody Conservatory of Music, the National Flute Association’s national convention in Anaheim, California and at New England Conservatory’s Jordan Hall. She won First Prize in the National Flute Association’s 2009 Young Artist Competition and has been a featured soloist in Moscow, performed at the Marina Piccinini International Master Classes in Zurich Switzerland, concertized in Brazil and Chile, performed at Japan’s Suntory Hall and appeared as a concerto soloist with the New World Symphony performing Carl Nielsen's Concerto for Flute under the baton of Alasdair Neale. In the United States, Brook has played in many of the most notable venues, working with some of the world’s great maestros. Schoenwald was a fellow with the Boston Symphony’s Tanglewood Music Center for four summers, culminating in two summers as a New Fromm Player at the Tanglewood Festival of Contemporary Music. She has also performed with the Grand Teton Festival Orchestra. Schoenwald is an active performer of contemporary music and is committed to the process of collaborating directly with composers. Schoenwald earned her Master of Music degree from Carnegie Mellon University, where she studied with Jeanne Baxtresser and Alberto Almarza. She holds undergraduate and performance degrees from the Peabody Institute of John’s Hopkins University where she studied with Marina Piccinini.
